big time gratitude + cold and flu prevention

Gooood morning friends! I am feeling full this morning. Full of gratitude, love and energy.

I had a great meet up with one of my favourite friends and fellow wellness warriors yesterday. You know that feeling when you are in the presence of someone who challenges you, makes you laugh and has this super high vibration that elevates your world? We all need to surround ourselves with more of those people.

So thank you sweet Jillian for a beautiful day in the city.

I also woke up to find an amazing testimonial in my inbox, from a client of mine. Seriously, I have been so blessed to work with amazing women who are taking control of their health and making a commitment to themselves and their families to get healthy. I'm honoured to be doing the job that I am doing and I am forever grateful for the diverse group of women I have been able to work with all over the world. I also want to thank you for following along on my journey :)

Fall is here and that means cold and flu season is lurking.

Did you know that a healthy body is able to disarm, and conquer any bacteria, virus, parasite and even things like cancer cells that are found circulating in our body?

To say that you should never or will never get sick is being a little more than optimistic I realize, however, if you and your family struggle to battle any little virus that is going around, that is an indication that there is some work to be done in order to bring your immune system into better shape.

I prefer to use natural alternatives for both prevention and healing when necessary.

Last year I shared THIS article on ways to boost your immune system health so I thought I would share the link again as a little reminder. I also want to add a bit to the discussion with a few other tools that I have added to my healthy tool box, especially since welcoming sweet Sloane into our world.

Fermented foods = healthy and happy gut: Fermented foods are natures most magical natural probiotic rich foods and they are some of the best gifts you can give to your digestive system, which is subsequently nearly 80% of your immune system too. It would be great to include some of these in your meals each day and better yet, your kids if they will try it. Here are a couple of starter recipes you can experiment with: Probiotic + Enzyme Salad recipe from Kimberly Snyder as well as  Fire Cider from Savory Lotus.

Probiotic supplementation: In addition to eating the right foods and probiotic rich foods, a high quality probiotic supplement can be a great tool for every member of the family. I have even been supplementing Sloane with probiotics since about 7 months, up until then she was getting this through breastfeeding. Talk to someone at your local health food store to find a quality supplement that will suit your needs.

Essential oils for prevention: I will briefly touch on the subject of essential oils but I have been using them for the last couple of years most specifically in the my own DIY home cleaning and beauty products. This summer I was introduced to an incredible product called Young Living that is both therapeutic and food grade quality. Little did I know, not all essential oils are equal. I have been experimenting with this in our own home and have fallen in love with a few of their single and mixed blends to use as a preventative tool for immune system and overall health. I believe in the power of plants and I was so happy to see that one of the health guru's that I look up to, Kris Carr, believes in and uses the products also. I hope to share more about this in future posts as I experiment more and truly experience the benefits. Some of my favourite to date are...

  • Peppermint - Can be taken orally if you feel a cold coming on, used aromatically to breathe better or even dab a bit under your nose to help clear up any breathing issues. I have also heard from others who used this to bring down a fever for children, which I haven't yet had to use.
  • Theives blend - High potency anti-viral and immune boosting, I used this when I felt a scratchy throat coming on by ingesting and rubbed this on the bottom of Sloane's feet when she was coming down with the sniffles.
  • Lemon - Natural disinfectant for my home cleaning products and I add some to a bit of water sometimes when I'm not using juice of a lemon.

Here are a couple of my go-to healing elixirs when I feel that I might be coming down with something.

  • Oil of Oregano oil AND/OR Thieves blend {as mentioned above} taken orally or applied to the soles of the feet.
  • Warm water with the juice of a lemon, honey and ginger root
  • Fresh pressed juices using lots of ingredients like greens, carrots, apples, lemon and ginger.

I hope you can use this as a resource and find a few ways to implement new healthy practices for the whole family so that you aren't plagued with sickness throughout the winter months.
