when you think of a green st.patrick’s day beverage, I’m guess that this comes to mind….

oh yes, green beer. even if you do choose to indulge in a couple of these I hope that you will also consider making a little shamrock juice.

this beautiful green drink will make your cells very very happy.

as I have mentioned before, I do not currently own a juicer but my mother does. and since I am living at her house I have been using her handy-dandy machine every morning. I think a juicer has officially been added to my birthday + christmas wish list.

today I juiced this green goodness + I hope that you too will give it a try.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 4 celery stalks
  • handful of parsley
  • 1 green apple
  • 1 pear
  • 2 large handfuls of greens (your choice what you use)
  • handful of pea sprouts
  • juice of one lime
  • juice of one lemon

all these gorgeous green ingredients will leave you bursting at the seams with energy + beauty.

if a little shamrock juice isn’t what you are looking for, here are another couple of green recipes you may just love: salt + vinegar kale chips, spicy kale chips, kale, spinach + avocado salad + a green smoothie.

my travel essentials

I am writing this from sunny California – and I am obviously loving every minute of it. this hockey-world is very unpredictable, especially when you are up and down between the AHL + NHL. but for this moment, we are in California and enjoying the journey. it is especially nice to be reunited with the husband.

for as long as I have been with my husband each season has brought travel. over the years it of course gets easier …actually I am still horrible at packing my luggage! however, I am good at packing a little care-package that I take with me every time I travel.

here are a few of my favourite item’s that I have with me when I travel….

  • a good book + magazines - on this trip I brought a great book (courtesy of my sweet friend Nik) called Locavore. seriously  very interesting if you want to know a bit more about how food gets to your plate. I especially love that this is written by a Canadian journalist that focuses on the Canadian food-chain.
  • iPod - I’m sure no explanation is necessary here. good tunes make any flight much more enjoyable.
  • water (not pictured ) – this is ESSENTIAL because flying leaves you super dehydrated. to avoid fatigue + keep your gorgeous skin plump I always increase my water intake before a flight. this time I sipped on a coconut water heading to the airport as well + for each flight picked up a large bottle of water to drink on the flight.
  • snacks –  typically I will pack a few energy bars (vega are my fav), a mixture of nuts + seeds (this trip it was raw almonds, walnuts, cashews, sunflower + pumpkin seeds – not pictured), goji berries, piece of fruit + some tea. while airports have healthier alternatives to choose from now, depending on your flight schedule I always like to have my own snacks so I don’t have to rely on airport or in-flight meals. I also make sure to fill up at home before leaving so that I am not famished when I get to the airport + make a poor decision. there are also a few gin-gin candies in the picture as well, a favourite of mine so far during pregnancy.
  • vitamin C packs – in addition to packing my daily supplements I also brought a handful of Emergen-C packs to add to my water. it’s just a little extra insurance for my immune system.
  • rose water – I like to keep some in my carry on to spritz my face whenever I feel the need. it’s hydrating + refreshing for a long day of travel. you can purchase some at most health food stores and several face care lines now carry their own tonic that is similar.
  • antibacterial wipes – I found these great wipes at a local health food store. they are made with more natural ingredients and didn’t leave my hands dried out. I also used them to wipe down my arm rests + tray on the plane. yes, I was “that” crazy-germaphobe …but after just getting over a little cold I did NOT want another one!

depending on the duration of my stay I often try to find a grocery store that I can stock up on a few items for the room. there is a great grocery store here called Mothers. I grabbed a few essentials including fresh fruit, greek yogurt + water. in addition to an amazing lunch from their fresh salad bar I also picked up the biggest green juice I could get my hands on …. YUM!!!

green juice + palm trees make this girl happy :) I actually drank half of this green goodness yesterday afternoon and saved some to enjoy before breakfast this morning.

I hope this will help serve as a guide for future travel.

I would love to know – what are some of your favourite travel essentials? for all the mom’s, are there any must-have item’s you just can’t leave home without?
